Basic CdLS World concepts

This page is not UP-TO-DATE

Most of the page can still be used, but note that in 2015 significant changes to the site have been made

CdLS World is divided into Spaces and Pages. Lateral menus are handled using Panels.

As you can see when you scroll down CdLS World is based on XWiki; an OPENSOURCE platform. You can find a lot of reading about XWiki.

Space

CdLS World is organized with 'spaces'. A space is a collection of wiki pages (A bit like a Folder or Directory). Grouping pages in a space makes them easier to find and browse.

We have created a spaces, they serve different purposes;

 Space NameDescription
CdLSWorldFor all public documents of CdLS World federation and it's members. The pages deal with different topics, mainly about Cornelia de Lange syndrome, but also about events, support groups and other information (like these help guides). This space is the oldest on the website, before we actually organized pages in spaces. Therefore it can use a bit of tidy-up ;-)
CdLSAssociationsCdLS World is a federation of connected organizations that help families. In this space each organization can tell about it's mission, goals, important contacts.
To find a index of this space goto this page...
CdLSDisplayThis space allows for creating posters, invitations and other that have a image centric nature
cdlsLeadersThis is a blogging space for leaders of the connected organizations. It is meant to keep each other up-to-date on topics that are discussed. This space uses the XWiki blogging application to create pages. Only people that are in the group 'cdlsLeaders' can add or modify pages
CdLSMeetingsThis space allows for adding meetings that are organized by one of the members. It is still in experimental mode.
CdLSResearchThis is a space for news about research. Researchers can tell the families around the world about what research is done.
cdlsSACThis is a blogging space for SAC members. It is meant to keep each other informed about topics under SAC Discussion. This space uses the XWiki blogging application to create pages. Only people in the group 'cdlsSAC' can add/modify pages.
cdlsToDoThis space contains a list of documents that describe potential improvements of the site.
CdLSTopicsThis is a space for all the important topics found in CdLS. It is based on the idea of dr. Chris Oliver to strengthen the Ask the Expert pages by generic Topic knowledge which can be tagged and linked to from the Ask the Expert pages.
CdLSWorldInstructionsThis is the space where you can find instructions for using this website. (the page you are reading now is in this space!)
CdlsatdPublic
CdLSATEPublic (new version)
This space contains a database of Questions and Answers about the CdL syndrome. These Q&A's are selected by the Scientific Advise Committee (SAC) because they are seen as repeatedly asked questions. By means of the database we hope our visitors will be helped when they have a personal question. All Q&A's will be translated in world languages (work in progress).
ATD is the abbreviation of ASK THE DOCTOR.
Adding pages in this space should only be through the ATD-application, and not by the standard XWiki methods.
CdLSATEPrivatThis space is a secured space where ONLY REGISTERED AND ACCEPTED people can post questions. The support staff and volunteers of our member-associations will help to find or get a answer
ATE is the abbreviation of ASK THE EXPERT
Adding pages in this space should only be through the ATE-application, and not by the standard XWiki methods.
MainThis space is ONLY used for the start page of CdLS World. It contains a few HELPER pages delivered by XWIKI
XWikiThis space is for SITE administration only. It will hold all registered people.
Adding pages in this space should only be through the XWiki-applications, and not by the standard XWiki methods.
BlogNLEach member country can claim a country specific SPACE to post/publish a BLOG about CdLS affairs in it's association. There can be a BLOG for each memeber association

You can create as as many pages as you want in every space (limited by your access rights!)

Putting pages in the same space is useful for the following reasons:

  • Pages located in the same space are displayed together in the navigation treeview
  • CdLS World lets you easily create an index of all the pages in a space
  • The look & feel can be set at the space level (skin + panels), allowing for different display per space.
  • User rights can be set at the space level
  • Search scope can be limited to a specific space

The homepage of a space is usually created at SpaceName/WebHome.

The homepage of CdLS World is Main/WebHome

Page

A page is the basic unit of content in CdLS World. A page is usually divided in 4 areas:

  • Action bar (located at the top): allows you to interact with the current page
  • Content area: This is what our visitors are interested in
  • Panels (either on the left or right of the page, on both sides or hidden)
  • Footer: containing Privacy policy, Terms of Use, Disclaimer etc
  • Hidden but important information of the page are:
    • Comments (what people have to say about the page; can be enabled in the future)
    • Attachments (files that have been uploaded to the page)
    • Page history (every version of the current page)
    • Document information (parents, children, tags, included pages, backlinks)

The following actions can be performed on any CdLS World page, provided the current user has the rights to do it:

  • Edit the page
    • Using the WYSIWYG editor: this is a rich text editor that allows you to modify the contents of your wiki page easily
    • Using the wiki editor: for users accustomed to writing in wiki syntax
  • Print & export the page
    • Using the print menu, the user can display a print preview of the current page
    • Each page can be exported in the following formats: HTML, PDF, RTF (for MS Office) and XAR (XWiki Archive)
  • Watch the page
    • The user can choose to add the current page to his watchlist
    • Whenever the page gets modified, he will receive an email notification

Additionally, administrators can perform the following actions:

  • Change page access rights
  • Edit the page's objects and classes (You can find out more about these concepts on XWiki.org)
  • Rename, copy and delete the page
