WaihonaPedia: Quick training

Introduction

Anyone that has joined the community can change WaihonaPedia!
This is a free to use internet encyclopedia where you can search for information and add information. You need to register to help write, correct and expand articles, and then you can get started right away!

To get you off to a flying start, we'll take you through the most important things you need to know about writing in a Wiki in this crash course.

You can stop the crash course at any time and return at a later time.

Try it out

Anyone can edit a Wiki (and WaihonaPedia is a Wiki, remember that!)

A Wiki can be edited very easily. Try it by clicking on 'Write' above. You will see that you can easily edit the text below. That's how it works on almost all Wikipedia pages, so anyone can write to the encyclopedia. Useful, isn't it?

Principles

A few simple, but important rules
Because there are a lot of people working on the wiki at the same time, there are a few simple rules that everyone has to follow. This is how we try to keep the encyclopedia accessible for everyone.

There are many people who read and edit this wiki. New edits are checked by others in this community and corrected or undone if necessary. This wiki has the following basic principles for keeping content and working atmosphere up to standard:

  • WaihonaPedia is an encyclopedia: the aim is to describe existing knowledge as accurately as possible. Information must be verifiable on the basis of already published sources or you refer to personal experience where others need to trust you.
  • WaihonaPedia has a neutral starting point. WaihonaPedia is not intended to promote ONE point of view, to advertise or to become known. Do not pay disproportionate attention to other opinions that are not yours.
  • WaihonaPedia contains free content. Texts on this wiki are freely available and freely editable, in accordance with the free license CC BY-SA. What you add to this wiki is automatically under this license. Do not copy any text unless you have been given demonstrable permission to do so.
  • Be a collegiate. Respect everyone who contributes to this wiki. Assume good faith. Stay polite and calm, even when it's hot. Discuss when you can't figure something out. Be prepared to explain your contributions.

Writing

How can you edit?

In this section of the Quick Course, we'll show you step-by-step how to edit a page. In addition, we will explain the usefulness of your username and its benefits. Your user name makes it easier for you to adjust the wiki to your personal preferences, for example by enabling the Visual word processor (WYSIWYG).

Some pages are protected. Pages that are protected cannot be edited just like that: instead of the "edit" button there is a "view source" option. With this you can view the content of the page, but you can't change it. This option is out of scope for this training.

As you can see, editing wiki pages is done in three steps:

  1. Step 1: Click on Write (Edit)
  2. Step 2: Modify the text
  3. Step 3: Check your modifications
  4. Step 4: Click on "Save and View" changes

Step 1: Click on Write

Above each page there is an Write button. Take a look:

Step 2: Modify the text

Once you've clicked Write, an edit screen will appear containing the page's source text. Type in the edit screen to change or add information.

In the source text you usually see, besides the normal text of the page, all kinds of codes. These codes are intended for layout, images, etc. You will get more information about this in the remainder of this quick course.

Step 3: Check your editing

You can check your changes in advance by using the "Preview" button:

Have you already saved the text and found out that you made a mistake? It doesn't matter! You can simply click "write" again and correct the error.
In this case, "minor change" is also checked...

If you have clicked "Preview" to check, you will see what the page will look like after your edit, before you have actually changed the page. Everyone makes mistakes; this option ensures that you discover them in time.

This button also allows you to experiment with the layout. Just remember to scroll down after checking and still press "Save and View"!

Step 4: Click on "Save and View"

When you have finished editing, you can click the Save and View button at the bottom of the edit screen:

Once you've clicked "Save and View", your changes will be visible to anyone who can visit WaihonaPedia, anywhere in the world! It's a good habit to briefly describe what you've changed or why the change was made. This helps those who check the changes. The description is also visible in the editing history.

Username

You need to register to help write, correct and expand articles; and after that you can get started right away.

Having a username has a number of advantages:

  • You can edit articles
  • You can rename articles (only when you set your preferences to 'advanced')
  • you can edit secure articles (only when you set your preferences to 'advanced')
  • You can easily find your contributions
  • you can keep an eye on articles on a watch list
  • you can send and receive e-mail
  • a user name facilitates communication with other users

Please note that you only need to request a user account once; the same account can be used in all projects.

Visual word processor

The tag-based editor may seem complex and confusing to new users. Alternatively, you can try the Visual editor (WYSIWYG).

Opmaken

Tekst opmaken
