How to ADD a translation

To add a translation requires a few steps;

  1. you have to click on EDIT (This option is shown if you have rights for that page)
  2. You will see Three panels on the right side of your screen:
    1. Document Information: This will show the syntax: XWiki 1, XWiki 2.0 or XWiki 2.1 (If it is a very old page it can be 1.1, normally it will be 2.0 or 2.1)
      1. Depending on the language you are viewing before you click EDIT you might see Default language: In CdLS-World this should be 'en' (A international standard two letter abbreviation for English). If you clicked on EDIT while in another as default language you will not see Default language field.
    2. Document translations: First a bold line indicating which document you are editing, Then a line indicating which translations there are already. If your language is there, click on the code to read that translation. And finally a line saying "Translate this document in:" followed by all supported languages on CdLS World that not yet have a translation of this page
    3. A panel called XWiki Syntax help, if you make you're translation directly in XWiki syntax very helpful, if you're using WYSIWYG less needed.
  3. pick a code from the list labelled "Translate this document into:"
  4. The system will make a copy of the "default text" version, in our case usually English. Note that the bold line "You are now editing:" indicates the language selected in the previous step. But the text you are about to translate is still in English (or in the default language)
  5. You are free to choose how you enter the translation.
    1. A practice used often is to type a translated line above of the english line. Once you are happy with that line delete the original english line. So going line by line.
    2. Another practise is to copy the original text into you're favorite text editor; MS-Word or other. Just work on the translation until you are happy with it. Then copy the translated text.
      1. If you're in WYSYWIG pasting requires two steps
      2. if you're in Source mode, you can just paste the text.

Once you are happy with translation click below on "SAVE and VIEW". IF you are working on the text a bit longer it is good practice to click "SAVE and CONTINUE"; this will make sure that the changes are saved should you're computer fail to work or if you're internet connection is unstable. PREVIEW will give you a PREVIEW and a button "RETURN TO EDITING". "CANCEL" is for deleting all changes you have made and return to the last SAVED version
