Sibling Speech

Question

Is there a pattern of speech delay in younger siblings of children with CdLS?

Answer of our experts

I am not aware of anything unusual about the communication development of siblings of children with CdLS, although I do recall being asked this question by one or two parents at CdLS conferences. My current thinking is that siblings are not at any higher risk for speech delay than any other group of siblings. Clinical research suggests there are some language disorders which seem to "run in families", but there is no evidence that siblings of children with syndromes have more problems than siblings in general
